In the Theatre with Kevin Murphy - Year One - Columbia Pitcures

Some odd centuries ago the most well know book in history was written and it became so popular that everyone knows about it and you can find it in every hotel dressing room, im talking about the bible about more than two certuries ago another book was written that has become the churches mortal enemy; the Oragin of Species. Both books have conflicted with each other for two centuries with creationism verses evolution. Then something comes out that contridicts both of them and makes no sense whatsoever, in this case its Year One.

Year One is set in an era that can never exsict; an era in which cave men and biblical characters coexisted as one. Zed (Jack Black) is kicked out of his tribe for eating the forbbiden fruit and his best friend Oh (Micheal Cera) decides to come with him to give him company and make sure he doesnt hit himself. On the way they meet Cain of the book of Genesis (David Cross)(who is aperently not the same Cain one would remember from the book of Genesis), who flees with the them and then double crosses them by selling them to the Roman's. This sets up for a pretty poor conflict between love and friendship.

I was expecting to like this movie because im a huge Jack Black fan, but the second before i was going to see it i came to the realization that im only going because on of my favourite comedians is in it, thats a preety poor assumption that i will think its posative. When i got out i said that wasnt a good movie while the rest of my family found it hystarical. The reason i didnt like it was its lack of both scientific and spirtual evidence, but the thing is a comedy can make it big if it has popular comedians, gas, and brief nudity and your common folk will love itbut everyone else including the critics will say “i can think of nine hundred and ninty nine better things i could have done than seen this movie.” As i said before this film contridicts creatonism with evolution. I for one support evolution but thats not what i wanna talk about. I wanna talk about how Hollywood takes both theories of how we were created and makes it look like the Flinstones or the Davey and Golith show, well i for one didnt like either. The problem is they think they can make money of the theory of how we were created and wait for certin groups to protest against them thus giving them higher earnings. But with Year One both are present in their own times and nobody is questioning it. The problem with the evolution view is that their not played as really practical neanderthols most of them speak clear english while others are on the brink of caveman, so if your going to do write a caveman into your script eith make him realistic or turn it into a cartoon because their arnt as many limits with that bran. The problem with the creationism view is that some stories from the bible are put in their but none of them are consitant with each other and hardly any of them are very accurate even for a comedy. Jack Black (for sure) and Micheal Cera can do a better job than this and can build much better chemistry with different actors with Jack all wild and Micheal all calm, both are too opposite to be put in a main cast. So i say dont see it dont rent, dont even skip it just pretend it was a bad memory like Jack Blacks underhair.

My Rating: 0/4 Shamrocks
