I don't wanna give away too much of the plot for this movie because their are many star trek fans who would be very upset with me if i gave away the plot so i will say only what i saw in the trailers; James T Kirk is a careless rebel playing by his own rules who joins the enterprise as a new recruit after learning that his father was a captain for a brief period and died saving hundreds including his mother and unborn self. While on the enterprise he meets his polar opposite the honourable Mr Spock and the two conflict with each other on how the enterprise should be run and how the crew views the two of them.Im not a hard core trekie like some of my friends but im really into Star Trek and going in i was thinking are they really going to throw in all the catchphrases from the original show in this movie? And the answer is yes. Its what the characters say that shape who they are and that has always been the case for Star Trek and thats how people can remember the original cast best today. First of all the movie has great special effects probably the most revolutionary in terms of showing outer space in a feature film. What makes the special effects for Star Trek so good is because they are put into alternate environments and different territories than what most people have seen therefore the special affects are an important asset since we don't know whats out their we have to guess what that what is and use special effects to clarify it. This movie stands out as a more mature Star Trek film as the characters from the original series do take their roles more seriously but not as much as the new Kirk and most of these actors seem to take the physical action with great drive as shown in a terrific fighting scene between Kirk and Spock.
I think the character that was portrayed best in this movie was Spock who was my favourite character on the old TV show; calm, cool, collective, intelligent, a fierce warrior and a honourable friend which is just what Zachary Quinto bring to the screen just like how Leonard Nimoy brought the same presence when he plays Spock. Zachary Quinto also shows the best character chemistry in the film regardless of their personality and beliefs as shown between him and Kirk and the greatest actor in Sci-fi history. In Sci-Fi acting seems to be the hardest priority as the movie takes a strongg focus on science its hard for the actors tofluently understand what their talking about or doing, thats why a good actor should have a balanced approach to the role they get otherwise the audience will think they are idiots only trying to read off science than try to live it like their characters do and from what i see every character in this movie that has knowledge of science is capable of living it. At the beginning of this review i said i have a soft spot for it well when i was a little kid i would always stay up past my bedtime (collapsing on mattress now), and watch Star Trek The Next Generation with my dad. I figured since id be leaving for college soon i should take my dad to see Star Trek as a fathers day present and the two of us spend some quality time before we split. So if you loved Star Trek back in the old days you'll still love it now in this high flying adventure that is impossible to deny unless your a girl or a Star Wars fan.
My Rating: 4/4 Shamrocks
